Musette Movie Magic TAKE THREE!

Musette Takes Three by bringing you girls, girls, girls. These four screen dreams couldn't be more different from one another, but what's one thing they do have in common? Sensational style.

Alicia Silverstone as Cher Horowitz in Clueless, 1996

Any girl that grew up in the 90's can vouch for their undying love of Cher. Her mini dresses, platforms, credit card and jeep were all worship worthy. Clueless helped define a generation, and we couldn't be more proud to have been a part of it.

But this is an Alaia!!! Steal the show as magnificently as Cher did in 90's inspired luxury items. Don't be timid to colour coordinate, or squeeze into the tightest of bandage dresses.

Clockwise from left: LNA t-shirt, Miu Miu pumps, Herve Leger dress, blazer from Topshop, bag by Lanvin, Chloe platforms, Marc by Marc Jacobs skirt, Alaia skirt, Philosophy di Alberta Ferretti shoes.

Anne Bancroft as Mrs Robinson in The Graduate, 1967Here's to you Mrs Robinson, not simply for seducing an impressionable Benjamin, but for having the wardrobe to pull it off. Whether you were lurking in animal print furs or lounging in a silk nightgown, you were a cougar who knew how to dress.

Revive the look that made Mrs Robinson so darn irresistible in over the top items that have enough glamour to seal the deal.
Clockwise from left: Jonathan Aston tights, Linda Farrow 'Jackie O' sunglasses, dresses by Matthew Williamson and Stella McCartney, Agent Provocateur perfume, Hermes scarf, shoes by Marc Jacobs, leopard ring by Roberto Cavalli.

Gwyneth Paltrow as Margot Tenenbaum in The Royal Tenenbaums, 2001

She was sullen, depressed and beautiful. As the adopted member of the Tenenbaum clan, Margot took our breath away with a razor sharp bob, heavily made up eyes and vintage furs. Only could such an oddly enchanting girl steal the hearts of both Richie and Raleigh St. Clair

Give a tennis dress a unique twist with a second-hand find. Embody all that was lovable about Margot by fusing preppy with peculiar, but try and avoid the cigarettes and missing finger.

Clockwise from left: vintage fur coat, hair clips from Forever 21, tennis dresses from Fred Perry and Lacoste, white gloves by Chanel, vintage fur coat, Bottega Veneta pumps, black brogues by Rachel Comey, Birkin bag.

Liv Tyler as Lucy Harmon in Stealing Beauty, 1996Watching Liv frolic in the Tuscan hills made for the best coming of age story of the 90's. Her unruly hair, barely-there dresses, cute swimsuits, and innocent outlook made for movie magic. Liv's Lucy is the quintessential girl of summer.

Go free in scanty summer must-haves, sans shoes or bra. Also, let your hair go wild and your spirit will follow!

Clockwise from left: Irwin & Jordan shirt, Eres one piece, dress by Marc by Marc Jacobs, Acne shirt, dress by Miu Miu, Stella McCartney Stella in 2 perfume, Ksubi shorts, lace underwear by Stella McCartney, dress from Topshop.

You Look Wonderful Tonight, Second Edition

Back in May, Musette paid tribute to four women who stole the red carpet thanks to their unforgettable frocks. Since then, the CFDA has partied, the glamorous headed to Cannes, and the awards season celebrated a beautiful newcomer. Enjoy the dresses that made these nights so wonderful.

Caroline Trentini in vintage Thierry Mugler at the CFDA Party of the Year
At a party that put an emphasis on all things super-heroic, model Caroline Trentini suitably embodied one part good, one part evil in harsh black velvet and a swept up bun. This Brazilian bombshell took a risk that paid off in a 90's get-up, complete with dark eyes and an elaborately shaped dress. Think Cat Woman with a demure twist.

Marion Cotillard in Chanel Haute Couture at the Bafta Awards

Bless the birth of a true screen siren-and of the Academy Award winning, La Vie En Rose singing, hopelessly chic variety no less! For her role as Edith Piaf, Marion Cotillard received standing ovations around the world, but it was her impeccable appearance at the Bafta's that really made Musette want to stand up and clap.

Karen Elson and Jack White, both in Marc Jacobs at the CFDA Party of the YearIt's no secret that Jack White loves red headed women, and with Karen Elson as his wife he's scored top of the class. The two made their grand entrance at the Met in pure style, Elson shined in ruffles and a fringed bag, while Jack's transformation from rock star to gentleman is given two thumbs up. If you can't get enough of this darling couple, check out September's British Vogue, featuring Elson on the cover.

Natalie Portman in Balmain and Lanvin at the Cannes Film Festival

Pint-sized Portman always gets it right, favouring Lanvin by night and casual-cool by day. Pictured here in a Balmain dress, bolero by Lanvin, and personally designed animal-friendly footwear, Natalie took the Cannes cake. With her beau, singer Devendra Banhart, beaming from the sidelines, Little Miss Natalie Portman proved she can make a grown man cry.

Musette Spotlights: The American Indian Inflluence

The fringe, feathers, embroidery, and headdresses are in part what make the American Indian aesthetic so undeniably beautiful. Cher and Bob Mackie could not resist being inspired during their heyday, but more recently we see that Balmain and Anna Sui can't seem to either.

Balmain's front man Christophe Decarnin focused on fringe and a bird motif for his Spring 2008 collection, and we love him all the more for it.

American Indian's of the Pacific Northwest served as muse for Anna Sui in her Fall 2008 line. Sui made her admiration known in the form of leathers, fun headpieces and intricate beading.

Musette Look of the Week

Chan Marshall AKA Cat Power at Lollapalooza
If there is one beauty who always keeps her cool on the fashion front it's Musette's favourite songstress, Cat Power. Chan took to the stage at the renown Chicago festival in a peace t-shirt, black jeans and her trademark brogues-an ideal look for pulling off her wacky dance moves and on stage impersonations. This cute kitty is adored by Karl Lagerfeld and has the rest of the fashion world at her mesh gloved fingertips, but continues to opt for basics. Staying easy and breezy certainly suits her, but let's face it-CM would look good in anything.

Musette Looks Back: I Just Wanna Dance!

Whether they were tiny dancers or strippers with a dream, the leading ladies of dance floors past inspire not only our moves, but our clothing choices too.

Lycra & Cotton! What a Feeling!

As both steel worker and exotic dancer, Jennifer Beals knew how to dress down for 1983's mega-hit Flashdance. Harness your inner ballerina in loose grey marl, itty-bitty shorts and chunky socks. Now comfort is always cool thanks in part to this gutsy girl.

Tried, Tacky and True-Shine Like a Showgirl!

Elizabeth Berkeley wasn't afraid of sequins or skin in 1995's Showgirls and neither should you be. Her routines may have been risque, but this wild child could pull off a leotard better than an American Apparel model. Team paired down basics with a little glitz and glam to pay homage to everyone's favourite down on her luck stripper.

Baby Knows Best in 60's Inspired Dance Gear!Baby Houseman came a long way from carrying a watermelon to stealing the stage with Swayze in 1987's Dirty Dancing. Watching Babes learn the trickiest of steps in denim shorts, cropped tops and high heels prove that real dancing queens can manage to move in just about anything.

Musette Is...Checking Up On You

From statement stockings to all things metallic, the fall ready-to-wear collections threw us many cute yet crazy curve balls. However, the presence of plaid guaranteed one trend that will be very easy to embrace.
Preen tranforms lumberjack into lovely, above. Dries Van Noten yelled checkmate with a chunky wool jacket, ideal for any chilly night to come.
Thakoon's tartan touches will leave you yearning for a lesson on the bagpipes and a date with Ewan McGregor.
Fancy yourself more of a traditional gal? Then stay true to Chanel's magnificent, if not checkered past.

Musette Loves: Sam Riley

Be Still Our Collective Heart, Here Comes SR!
Best known for breaking out by way of last year's Joy Division biopic Control, Sam Riley is the brightest heartthrob to hit the scene as of late. Getting ready for the portrayal of Ian Curtis was no sweat for our rock god, who plays in a band when he isn't busy acting. Riley came from humble beginnings-think clothing factory in Leeds!-but has since made leaps and bounds, refusing for his star to go unnoticed.Find Riley in his next two films Franklyn and Nottingham, as well as looking dashing in the latest Burberry campaign. Sweet Sam currently lives in Berlin with, sigh... his girlfriend, actress Alexandra Maria Lara. However this couple is so red hot, how could you not approve?
Still...

Musette Look of the Week

Jessica Stam at the 303 Gallery Opening, New York
She may have a bag named after her by none other than Marc Jacobs, but Jessica Stam proved she still knows how to keep it casual at the opening of 303 Gallery's new space. Looking perfectly cute in a mini trapeze dress and flats, this cutie-pie was all smiles, attracting the photographer as well as the crowd. At a party where lower Manhattan's artistic elite kept it harsh and serious, Stam maintained her understated yet girly style in a look that challenged the art for the spotlight. The lovely Jessica Stam reminds us not to overdo it this weekend.

Musette Best Dressed...For Success

Musette features four hard working beauties who know that sometimes to get ahead you have to put your best (fashionable) foot forward.

Kathryn Neale Shaffer: Editor Extraordinaire
Kathryn Neale may have married into wealth but it didn't stop her from pursuing her passion for writing and fashion. With an enviable wardrobe dominated by sleek Calvin Klein items, Kathryn is currently at the top of her field as Vogue's freelance darling, and Teen Vogue's favourite stylist.

Alexa Chung: Presenting Perfection
There isn't much this Brit bombshell can't do. After receiving straight A's at University, Chung went on to excel at writing, acting and television presenting. It is no wonder she hates being labeled an It Girl having said it's 'a depressing title to hold.' Alexa has an undeniable knack for dressing herself which has found her in elite fashion ranks.

Genevieve Jones: Driven Designer
Just like her personal style, Genevieve Jone's self-titled jewelry line is bold and eye-catching. Easily mistaken as just another Manhattan party girl, Jones has put in time at Zac Posen, an interior design firm and at one time even tried her luck at singing. But it is Jones' eye for opulence that make jewelry designer her most successful career choice to date.

Sasha Pivovarova: Modeling Marvel
As an Art History student in Moscow, Sasha Pivovarova never dreamed she would become a supermodel. Today she is the long-running face of Prada, and walks the industry's most prestigious catwalks yet is still the shy yet focused girl she always was. While fellow models gossip backstage, Sasha can be found pencil in hand sketching her friends-her creative eye crossing over brilliantly to her own personal style.

Musette Honours Album Covers

London Calling, 1979
The cover art of The Clash's third studio album symblises a true 'rock and roll moment'. This sincere image captures Paul Simonon smashing his guitar in rockin' rage, and today is one of the most sought after album covers for die-hards everywhere. In usual Clash fashion, the songs of London Calling deal with unemployment, racial tension, and drug use-in fact producer Guy Stevens was an addict himself and took to throwing chairs around while the band was recording, which gave a chaotic sound to many of the tracks. The harshness of the cover is softened with large, bright, block letters giving it an upbeat appeal. The format of London Calling was an ironic parody of Elvis' debut album which featured the same use of typography and black and white photography. London Calling portrays the mood of the 70's like no other album art does by balancing the fun that was the music and the party scene with the general frustration concerning the state of the world. It seems our band really was all about The Clash.

Musette Look(s) of the Week

LOU DOILLON CAN'T STOP, WON'T STOP!!!

At a Couture party, Paris
It's not like you expect anything less than super, super cool from Lou Doillon, but recently she has been on a whirlwind style cyclone, giving all hipsters a run for their money. In Paris for the Couture shows, Lou kept it casual in a boxy jacket and tee, with her trademark disheveled locks. While others donned gowns with full faces of make-up, Doillon managed to shine the brightest, mastering unkempt and effortless as usual.

At the Whitney Art Party & Auction, New York

Who knew our English teacher's were referring to dresses when they told us to 'Keep It Short and Simple?! In Herve Leger, Lou poses perfect with fellow reveler Byrdie Bell. Dancing would have been no easy feat in these spray on numbers, but surely the two found a way. Lou takes a break from the boyish look she is so loved for, opting to show off her magnificent legs-we give her fashion snaps for mixing it up.

Musette Beauty File

SOME KIND OF WONDERFUL: NATALIA VODIANOVANatalia Vodianova is (cat)walking proof that sometimes fairy tales really do come true. Her story spans from Gorky, Russia to Paris, France; fruit stall employee to Vogue cover girl; moneyless to jet setting philanthropist.Natalia was a showstopper from an early age, swapping the fruit stall for a modeling agency as a teen. A Parisian scout convinced her to learn English and move to Paris, forcing our beautiful brainiac to master the language in a record three months. For her undeniable beauty and charm it wasn't long before supervodianova was booking shows, campaigns and magazine covers galore. Quickly joining the ranks of Kate Moss and Carolyn Murphy, Vodianova became one of the industry's top earners, and in true fairy tale fashion, Natalia met her Prince Charming, a handsome Brit named Justin Portman. The two have since married and had three children, and wee Nat is only 25, what a yummy mummy! Coming from a disadvantaged background led Vodianova to start the Naked Heart Foundation, a cause which provides Russian children with safe playgrounds. Of Naked Heart, Natalia says, 'I know I am probably not giving necessity to the children, but I am giving luxury.' A poised, beautiful, do-gooder, with an exceptional eye for style? We could have our generation's answer to Audrey Hepburn.

Musette Fills The Gap

Got some free time? Busy procrastinating? Musette offers up a few brilliant ways to fill the time.

READ: PURPLE MAGAZINEOliver Zahm is one cool dude, so when he founded Purple Magazine fifteen years ago it was bound to be a hit. This super-substantial biannual mag is jam packed with the clothes you want to wear, the art you want to buy and the people you want to befriend. Purple offers an edgy escape from Vogue, (where else are you going to find Vincent Gallo in a frock?) guaranteeing many hours of absorption.

LISTEN: SIBYLLE BAIERGerman beauty Sibylle Baier recorded a collection of songs under the title Colour Green in the early 1970's but it was not until 2006 that Sibylle's music was heard by those outside of her family. The songs that make up Colour Green are melancholic and beautiful, ideal for fans of Cat Power and Joni Mitchell, yet still in a class all of their own.

WATCH: THE DIVING BELL AND THE BUTTERFLY

This aesthetic masterpiece dreamily brings Jean-Dominique Bauby's memoir to screen. Bauby, the former editor of Elle, suffered a colossal stroke at age 43, losing control of his body with the exception of his left eyelid and mind. Directed by artist Julian Schnabel, The Diving Bell and the Butterfly is one not to be missed for its remarkable language, setting, cast of characters, and ultimate tale of triumph.

SURF: THE KSUBI WEBSITE
Australian fashion line Ksubi are at it again, this time with a fabulous new website. Featuring a lo-fi layout imitative of Google and Trade Me, ksubi.com is an innovative shopping experience which offers a no frills break from your typically savvy fashion sites. Just like the label's trademark jeans, the Ksubi site is fun and foolproof.
